OWAA Best Column Award
Outdoor Writers Association of America is pleased to announce that Nelson Sigelman of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, was recognized as an award recipient during the 2017 OWAA Excellence in Craft Contests. This annual awards program recognizes and honors the best work of outdoor communicators who are members of OWAA. This year, 63 individuals took home nearly $15,000 in cash prizes.
His award: Third place in the column contest for his articles in The Martha's Vineyard Times. The column pieces can be on any outdoor recreation, nature or conservation topic, but must be a regularly published, opinion-style column, not a general news or feature story.
Nelson's winning columns included "The primitive pursuit of success on Martha's Vineyard," a humorous take on a long quest to take a deer with a flintlock rifle; "A search for brook trout brings hidden rewards," about a longtime trout angler's passion for discovering hidden trout streams on Martha's Vineyard; and "A walk on the beach and new friends met along the way," about what President Obama missed by not taking the opportunity to go fishing during his Vineyard vacation.

NEOWA Writing Awards
Nelson Sigelman of Vineyard Haven received two writing awards at the annual meeting of The New England Outdoor Writers Association (NEOWA) held April 8 in Oxford, MA. Mr. Sigelman's story about the harmful effects of impoundments along the Mill Brook, "Mill Brook Summer Data Points to Deadly Temperature Spikes," published Oct. 12, 2016 in The Martha's Vineyard Times won first place in the best article newspaper category.
Mr. Sigelman's column about fulfilling his longtime goal of taking a deer with a flintlock rifle, "The Primitive Pursuit of Success on Martha's Vineyard," published Jan. 13, 2016 received second place in the best column newspaper category.
